Last week it was widely published that Samsung lost a huge legal battle against Apple in the use of certain and specific patents thus the South Korean company was ordered to pay a fine of one billion US Dollars.
A recent news (vague) report on geekets.com mentions that Samsung is paying off it's $1 Billion dollar judgement against them in U.S. nickels. The article starts off by saying that the courts never specified how the default against Samsung was to be paid off to Apple Corporation.
The articles goes onto mention that on the early morning of August 27th a little over 30 armored trucks full of 5 cent coins arrived at Apple headquarters in Cupertino California. It was noted that security officers turned away the armored trucks because they thought it was some kind of mistake but after a few moments Apples CEO Tim Cook allegedly received a phone call from Samsungs chief executive officer, Lee Kun-hee explaining that they would pay the judgment against Samsung in nickels.
The sites report even cites experts without any real foundation in the following paragraph: Law experts confirm that if court documents do not specify how a company or person is to pay of a judgement he or she can pay in whatever denomination theyd like as long as it is paid off in the currency that is stated in the judgement.
In one part of the article they even cite Samsung CEO Lee Kun-Hee as saying (and Im quoting here) Apple can use the nickels on their office vending machines or melt them down to make computers, that is not my problem, I am paying my debt and following the law to a T. All in all it will be a total of 20 billion coins and should complete delivery by weeks end"
