Skyfall is a love letter from Daniel Craig's James Bond to the history of 007. Of course, director Sam Mendes is meticulous and respectful (if not a bit lazy in borrowing a lot from other hit movies to fill in the blanks of this prelude .. starting from Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, the Bourne Series, Die Hard, Mission Impossible, Terminator, Hannibal Lecter series, MIB, etc) but his screen shots are just old school elegant (surely inspiring the London Olympics opening ceremony?) that in itself is absolutely a relief. If Bond movies are not shot with meticulous consideration over lighting and angles then it is throwing away its entire legacy. Bond movies have to impress audiences, any attempt at running and huffing or weird twisted camera work would turn a Bond movie a Bourne series movie or any of the Bruckheimers action movies.
I disagree that this Bond is exceptionally more human than others, as attempts have been launched over the years to make Bond a more rounded character. The wounded Bond is not new, neither is the Bond who cares so much for damsels in distress. What is new is that Daniel Craig's Bond is finally looking like he could grow up to be a prelude to Sean Connery 's Bond (even if the late Bond movies have f*@cked up the timelines beyond logical comprehension). This Bond finally shows some decent gentleman's charm, wit, resourcefulness and enough talent fitting for Ians Flemmings 007.
Script writing is surprisingly very very good ("Report to Turner" is one of the nicest touch). Love the little peaks of UK historical references and British quirkiness (bulldog porcelain, Churchill, underground, WWII, etc). The duty hazards are also ok as well as Bond's clearance test which gave a fuller body to the agency that Bond stands for. Patriotism (with the help of London Olympics parachute sequences) did this Bond a lot of good as it gave Daniel Craig's Bond credibility because lets admit it, he can't sell himself as a dashing hedonistic spy like Brosnan's or Moore's Bonds, so he might as well go the other direction.
Absolutely adore Ralph Fiennes as the new head
. He is the only one who looks like he really belongs to the Bond movie.. the others just as if they are working for an intelligence organization which might not necessary be part of a Bond movie. New Ms. moneypenny is quite good although some parts of it she was too cute it was bordering sitcom (Ms. Moneypenny as in Ian Flemming's version is not this girly girl nor too lighthearted). As for the Baddie, Javier Badem has once again proved he can hold his own. He has a credible aura as a killer who is from the same school as Bond (though not very credible as a hacker). Any other lesser actor would have difficulties walking the fine line between a character that is reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, some former Bond baddies and Julian Assange. I like that he didnt overdo the characters psychosis to the point of scene stealing (which he could and quite easily).
Don't like the reference to cyanide capsule (reminds one uncomfortably of suicidal terrorists and scummy dead nazis). Don't like the new Q (too brashy for an intelligence service.. this movie is trying too hard to appeal to the younger geek generation). Didn't like the fight sequence in Shanghai (too Tarantino?). Didn't like the showdown scene too much.. it feels too much like a western movie. And Adeles tone of the song is right but the lyrics arent just there yet, not close to what one would consider a memorable Bond theme song (think Carly Simons Nobody does it better).
The verdict: this is so far the Only Daniel Craig's James Bond film that someone who has seen all James Bond movies (from Dr. No onwards) would be able to watch without squirming or silently cursing. For a non-Bond film fan, it should be enjoyable as it strips itself out of all bombastic add ons (fewer gadgets, fewer Bond babes, fewer complex story line and exotic locations). I give it 4 stars out of five. Yes yes I have a soft heart for movies respecting its literature and its originals.because just like the movie repeated lines to us: "sometimes the old ways are better "
