The 2012 Honda Accord won’t have mechanical features that weren’t available on the 2011 Accord. Honda’s marketers could, however, mix and match some components as part of an eighth-generation Accord closeout. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine will again serve the lion’s share of Accord buyers. It should return at 177 horsepower in LX, XL-P, and SE sedans and at 190 horsepower in EX and EX-L sedans. The 190-horsepower version should repeat as the base engine in the 2012 Accord Coupe. Every four-cylinder Accord will again be available with a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The 2012 Accord’s V-6 will remain a 3.5-liter and should continue with 271 horsepower. The V-6 gas been exclusive to the EX V-6 and EX-L V-6 sedans and to the EX-L V-6 Coupe. In the sedans, the V-6 will again feature Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system, which idles three cylinders in low-demand cruising to save gas. A five-speed automatic will repeat as the sole transmission for 2012 Accord V-6 sedans. The 2012 Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe will again be positioned as a performance model. It should return as the only six-cylinder Accord available with manual transmission – a six-speed, in this case. It’ll also be available with the five-speed automatic and probably remain the only Accord with steering-wheel paddle shifters for manual-type gear control. Among Accord engines, the 190-horsepower four-cylinder represents the best blend of price, power, fuel economy, and handling balance. An overwhelming majority of Accord buyers choose automatic transmission, and while Honda’s five-speed automatic works well enough, Accord’s top rivals have more-efficient six-speed automatics. Like the majority of midsize cars, the 2012 Accord will again have front-wheel drive. This locates the weight the engine and transmission over the wheels that propel the car. That benefits traction in snow and, by concentrating the powertrain components in the front of the car, leaves maximum space for passengers and cargo.
