Patel (Gujarati પટેલ, paṭel, /pəʈel/) is an Indian title, in tune with the all familiar Hindu caste system, that represent the castes that are predominant in the Indian province of Gujarat that are either "agriculturalists" or "landlords"."

The upper castes, recognized by their Grecian features, are Kurmis/Kunbis,Jats. There are also Gujjar or Khawaja Patels, that can be recognized by their Indo-Aryan features.
The surname is also found among Parsis, mainly from the Kutch, and Mumbai.
Distribution of the name "Patel"
Patel is the most common non-Anglo-Celtic surname in Great Britain. According to the UCL surname profiler, Patel is the 24th most frequent surname for Britons and the only non Anglo name in the top 100 British surnames. This surname has a frequency of 2161 per million British citizens (0.21%).[3]
Patidars are wealthy agriculturalists who live primarily in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The surname Patel is the most widely used name for these people today. They were allocated the uncultivated land in the Petlad Taluka by the Solankis, the rulers of Gujarat in the pre-Mughal era. Patidar means "owner of Royal land". Pati means land and dar means the person who owns it. Many of these people were at first called "Patlikhs", which eventually evolved into the surname Patel. Patels are predominantly Gujarati and speak Gujarati language. They often have a deep social attachment to Gujarat and their home town in Gujarat. Two groups in Gujarat make up the Patidar community including: Leuva Patidar[Descendents of Lava (son of Lord Rama)] and Kadava Patidar[Descendents of Kusha (son of Lord Rama)].

It is estimated that as many as 60% of mid-sized motels and hotels in the US are owned by Indians, of that one-third have the surname Patel.[4]
