Scope choice is a very personal matter, but as a general rule of thumb here's a quick guide (for future reference from the wonders of Google if nothing else!):
Broken into 4 main quality brackets:
Chinese
Japanese
American
European
Chinese - Hawke (mostly), MTC, Nikko Stirling, AGS. These scopes are comparatively cheap tat, but they work up to a point and if you get a good one you get a good deal. Quality control can be lacking, and they're never good for centrefire use at night.
MTC deserves a mention here as they top the group for quality and are useable.Japanese - Hawke Endurance & Other Jap lines, Nikko Diamond, Bushnell 3200 Typically 300 GBP.-odd, they perform acceptably well at night given their price, and are reliable enough to use. They should be considered the minimum for sensible CF use. (unless you're Deker, who has el-cheapo across the board and keeps getting good ones. Get him to run a THL lottery syndicate )
American - Bushnell 4200 (though made in Japan), Leupold VX-III (USA, or Japan?), Zeiss Conquest (made in USA but with Euro glass, they top this group for quality and with good reason). They're good scopes, they're a good choice and they're mid-range in terms of money.
Zeiss Conquest is definitely the best of this group, I'm torn as to whether to put them here or in the European section really.
European - Nightforce (misnomer because they're American and made in Japan, but bear with me!), Meopta, Zeiss, Schmidt and Bender, Swarovski. Nightforce is included here because the glass is top-notch Japanese, and the build quality deserves to be here. These scopes are useable at night, they are the best you're going to get really. They have different options, weights, reticles and turrets. Choice between them is a personal thing, they all have things they're good at, and things they're less good at. Choosing one is entirely down to the individual, no one is definitely better than the other since choices this high up the market are not down to glass quality - it's bloody good for all of them!
Meopta is the cheapest of the bunch, and tbh is a bargain given the glass and build quality vs the price. BUT, other scopes are possibly a smidge better, and have different features which may or may not be worth the money to you.
Best advice is to try and see them in the flesh before buying, and if you know someone with this level of glass have a go, at night, before deciding.
Bit long winded but hope it helps someone!
