Ernie Langdon's fitness facts
American Handgunner, Sept-Oct, 2004 by Dave Anderson
Top level practical shooting requires fitness, endurance, speed and agility. Ernest Langdon, IDPA and IPSC champion shooter and familiar face in Handgunner, is one of the fittest people I know. We twisted his muscle-bound arm for some insights into his exercise program. It consists of four components: general fitness, specific strengths, Plyometrics and eye exercises.
"I exercise every day, alternating between aerobic and strength training," said Ernest. "There are lots of good aerobic exercises out there, like walking, jogging, swimming and biking. Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart, builds lung capacity and endurance, improves circulation and helps with weight control."
"For strength training I use a weight-lifting routine. My objective is to maintain and improve muscle tone and endurance, more than building muscle mass. I use weight levels which let me perform more repetitions for each set." This sorta' sounds like work to me.
Many fitness experts suggest weight training is a vital component of any exercise program. Not only does it maintain strength and muscle tone, it speeds metabolism and helps with weight control.
"Overall fitness and strength is basic. Then I'll work on building strength specifically for shooting. Strong arms and hands make it easier to move the gun quickly and to manage recoil. A grip-squeezer or even a sponge ball is a good tool for toning-up the muscles of the hands, wrists and forearms," continued Ernest.
"Competitive shooters need strong legs, not just for moving quickly through field courses, but to prevent fatigue from all the standing around. During a major match you'll spend just a few minutes actually shooting--but a lot of time standing, waiting your turn and watching others shoot. By the last stage of the last day, if your legs aren't fit, physical fatigue results in mental fatigue, loss of focus and mental mistakes."
